Communications Officer
Location: Remote
Position Type: Part-time volunteer (~2-5 hours a week)
About Us: Empowering Female Minds in STEM (EFeMS) is a nonprofit organization committed to supporting African women in STEM higher education. We offer mentorship, training, and community-building initiatives that help women thrive in STEM fields.
Job Overview: We are seeking a passionate and creative Communications Officer to join our volunteer team and help amplify our voice across digital platforms. As Communications Officer, you will shape and share the story of EFeMS—helping us reach and engage our community, partners, and the broader public. You'll work closely with the internal teams to design and execute communication strategies that highlight our impact and grow our reach. Please note that this is not a paid position.
Responsibilities:
Develop and implement monthly communications plans across EFeMS platforms (email newsletters and website)
Craft compelling content for campaigns, events, program updates, and success stories
Assist in drafting press releases, partner communications, and blog posts
Collaborate with the Programs and Fundraising teams to support outreach and visibility efforts
Ensure all messaging is aligned with EFeMS’s voice, values, and branding
Analyze engagement data and recommend content improvements
Support internal communications and community updates to EFeMS members
Qualifications:
Passionate about EFeMS’s mission and committed to empowering African women in STEMM
Experience in communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field (or currently studying in a relevant program)
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and collaborate in a virtual team
Creative mindset with an eye for storytelling and visual design
Commitment of 2–5 hours per week, including regular check-ins and monthly program participation
